LAKE NAIVASHA.
This lake is situated in the Great Rift Valley close to Hell’s gate Gorge with an area of 140sq.km. Lake Naivasha is also known as Sheer adventure.
This lake has got fresh blue waters that attract a lot of wild animals as a source of drinking point. Naivasha comes from the Masai word, Naiposha which means Rough water, and this is one of the most visited destinations in Kenya due to high number of wildlife and its closeness to Nairobi city.
The lake is dominated by different features such as mount Longonot, umbrella acacia trees and a thick forest along the cratered mountain. Recently, the lake surrounding is now covered by the flower plantations that are sold on the international market.
Lake Naivasha was put in place in 1995, with its seasonal lake which is not very deep and the water levels depend on the rainy season. In the dry season, the water level tends to reduce and in the rainy season, its levels tend to increase.
The lake is famous as a birding destination, given a huge population of birds that throng its salty shores. It is half an hour’s drive from Nairobi and the journey is rewarding with a great view of the stunning rift valley and taking an escape safari from the Nairobi city is the ideal way to visit this famous destination.
Attractions.
The unique tree called Elsamere. These form the forest along the shores of Lake Naivasha. They are sisal trees and the forest is composed of other tree species such as yellow fever trees, Candelabra, euphorbia among others.
Crescent Island. It is a private land sanctuary found along the Great Rift Valley and animals roam around the island because it is not fenced. It can be accessed by road 4X4 wheel drive or boat. The road used is mostly used by elephants.
Lake Naivasha. The lake is a hub for several animals and bird species and this has turned this lake to be the main attraction. The lake has attracted boating and birding due to the swamps in the banks.
Birdlife. The park is blessed with over 350 bird species i.e. gonolek, African fish eagle, African spoonbill, Red-knobbed coot among others. These are found in swamps, around the lake and in the forests.
Rich wildlife. It is home to over 100 species i.e. buffalos, zebras, hippos, big cats like lions, leopards. All these can view through game drives and boat cruise.
Activities in and around Lake Naivasha.
Game viewing. This is done through an open 4x4 wheel drive tourist vehicle around the lake. The drive can take between 2-4 hours depending on the several stops and time taken as you take photographs. The game drive/game viewing time rewards you an experience to enjoy wildlife in their natural habitats.
Birding. As the park harbours over 350 bird species, has enabled a birding experience where you can spot different birds. All you need to have is a pair of binoculars and a bottle of drinking water to keep you refreshing up. Among the birds spotted are gonolek, African fish eagle, African spoonbill, Red-knobbed coot and much more.
Hiking mount Longonot. Hiking is one of the adventures you need not miss on your safari to Lake Naivasha national park. It will reward you with the best memories of spotting wildlife, beautiful scenery among others.
Boat cruise. The cruise is done on Lake Naivasha where you are to spot water-loving birds and animals such as the hippos, African fish eagles among others. The cruise can take about 2-3 hours.
Other activities in around the lake are horseback riding and nature walks which are done along the elephant road near the swamp.
