MOMBASA.

Mombasa is a port / city located in south-eastern Kenya on the shores of Indian Ocean becoming the first city to be created in around 900AD and now it’s the second largest city in the country. It’s normally referred to as the blue and white city. It is where Kenya’s state house is situated and has an active international airport, extra-large port and hence a tourism city.

Also, you need to know that Mombasa is an island that is connected to the main land by bridge and ferries. It is also remembered in history as a slave market and visiting the island means that you will observe some architectural building of Arabs.

It covers an area of 14 square kilometres and originally, this land was occupied by the Bantu speaking people who used do farming, fishing and trading. Since Mombasa is strategically located, it was visited by several groups of people such as the Arabs, Portuguese, British, Persians and Turks among others.

A visit to Mombasa is amazing as you visit different attractions which are both man-made and natural such as religious sites, historical sites, and museums, local markets, beautiful beaches among others.

Why visit Mombasa port?

Fort Jesus.

This is one of the oldest and most attractive buildings in Mombasa that was built and completed in 1596 by the Portuguese. This was built to act as a trading place and it was constructed in the military architecture. It was declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO due to its uniqueness and historical importance in Mombasa.

Haller Park.

For animal lovers, this is where to go. This was a limestone quarry which was turned into a nature reserve by D.R. Haller Rene after it was abandoned. Thanks to DR. Haller who planted trees, built fish farms and created a lot of artificial attractions by bringing animals like giraffes, Cape buffalo, zebras, waterbucks, and hippos among others hence becoming a major tourist attraction.

Mombasa marine national park.

This is located in the Indian Ocean and protects the mangrove forests, coral reefs, sea grass beds among others. To enjoy this park, snorkelling and diving is the best option. This is double fun as you explore the park, and enjoy snorkelling adventure at the same time.

North coast beaches.

These beaches have clear waters with palm trees that make the view lively and serene. This also implies that there are a lot of water sport activities that can be done such as swimming, sunbathing, and beach soccer among others. Among other beaches that one can visit are Bamburi beach, Nyali beach, Shanzu Beach and more.

Mombasa tusks.

This cannot be missed while on a city tour or when you land in the Mombasa city. These tusks were built to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth of England in 1952. It is located in the heart of Mombasa city where almost shops and banks can be found.

Mamba village centre.

This is known as the east African largest crocodile farm and at this point you can learn more about their behaviours and life cycle. More to enjoy such as horseback riding at botanical gardens and you can also enjoy different bird species and other animals like zebras while on a visit.

A visit to the old town.

The old town makes you learn about the life of Portuguese rule and also you will spot the Old Portuguese architectural designs of the old age. After the Portuguese traders, other groups like Arabs, Europeans among others occupied this town and left it untouched.

Bombolulu Cultural Centre.

This is an organization for the disabled Kenyans living in Mombasa. The cultural centre has performance like the dances and music, explore the homesteads among others. You can support them by purchasing some souvenirs from their workshop.
