LAKE NAKURU.

Lake Nakuru is one of the rift valley soda lakes located and protected within the lake Nakuru national park.

This lake has algae that attract various birds and animals and this has made the lake famous due to flamingos that turn the place here reddish pink. Other mammals are found on the shores are the warthogs, olive baboons, white black rhinos among others.

Nakuru comes from the Maasai language meaning “Dust or Dusty”. Therefore, Lake Nakuru national park was established in 1961 as a bird sanctuary and in 1968 it was upgraded into a national park covering an area of 188sq. kilometres, located near Nakuru town.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN AND AROUND LAKE NAKURU?

Ideally, a one or two days safari to this park rewards you with great experience through discovering different attractions and among others are;

Lake Nakuru. This has attracted several wildlife in form of bird and animals such as the flamingos, warthogs, and rhinos among others.

Birdlife. The park is home to over 400 bird species including both permanent residents and migratory birds and among others include, Black-necked Grebe, Little Grebe, Great White Pelican, Yellow-billed Stork, African Spoonbill and Black-winged Stilt.

Mammals. The park harbours many animals including the white and black rhinos, warthogs, hippos, zebras, elephants, buffalos and many more. These animals give a good sight in - game viewing.

In vegetation, over 500 plant species are found in this park such as the yellow acacia, euphorbia forest among others.

Activities.

These attractions have led to the creation of different activities in the park and these include;

Game viewing / game drives; this is where the tourists have taken around the park using an open room tourist vehicle. The game drive lasts a maximum of 3hours of adventure. In this park, they are only two game drives i.e. the morning and evening game drives.

Bird watching; as this park is the true birders' paradise, it home to over 400 bird species which are both permanent resident and migratory birds and the famous ones being the flamingos.

Camping, as you are on your safari to explore wildlife in Africa, enjoy camping where you will have a night or two sleeping in a tent. Camping is fun as it is accompanied by a camping fire with storytelling either by the locals or fellow campers.

Nature walks are mostly done in many national parks and in Lake Nakuru, it’s different due to the unique environmental setting. The walk starts after a short briefing guide with an armed and well-experienced guide escort you to enjoy the savannah plains and meet a variety of wildlife.

When to visit Lake Nakuru?

Lake Nakuru can be visited any day of the year but you are advised to take a safari in the dry season and this is in the months of June-August and December to February.

The wet season hinders some activities and also makes it had to access the park. It also comes with fog and this makes it hard for sight viewing and photography.

How to access Lake Nakuru?

This lake can be accessed using either road or air transport. The road to the lake is well tarmacked from Nairobi and it covers a distance of about 165km taking about 2 hours’ drive. You can also use air transport by connecting to Naishi airstrip.

The accommodation in this park depends on your budget and it ranges from luxury to budget.
