Overview.
Visit the smallest national park in Uganda-Mgahinga national park in this 3 days safari where you will trek the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is situated in the Virunga Mountains and has diverse wildlife including the rare golden monkeys and gain it encompasses three inactive volcanoes and are Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo mountains.
It is home to over 250 bird species and this makes it a birders hub and they are endemics to the rift valley Mountains. Among the birds that can be spotted black-headed waxbill, Rwenzori turacos, western green tinker bird, Rwenzori batis, greater double collard sunbirds among others.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Mgahinga national park and stopover at Uganda equator
A pick up from the hotel room in Kampala or Entebbe and then make a transfer to Mgahinga national park. This park is the smallest national park in the country covering an area of 331 square kilometres with diverse wildlife and one of a few national parks in Africa where you can find rare primates like mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. This means that it’s interesting while on a visit to Mgahinga national park.
A stopover will be at Uganda equator in Kayabwe where you will have some experience, photography and maybe purchase some souvenirs for your loved ones at home or yourself. The road trip to Mgahinga also rewards Ankole Kigezi highlands which are well terraced hence giving good visual sight. On your arrival, you will be welcomed with a big glass of juice at the lodge and be ready to check-in.
Day 2: gorilla trekking in Mgahinga NP
An exciting and memorable day commences with breakfast and after a drive with a help of the tour driver-guide to the park offices where you will receive a briefing that can take only 30minutes. Then on at this time, you will be placed or grouped in 8 visitors per group to trek only one gorilla family, given instructions to enable you to trek smoothly like don’t feed animals, don’t litter the park, among others and again you will be assigned with the experienced park ranger guide who will guide you through the forest as you search for this beautiful creatures.
Start penetrating the forest and you need to know that it involves a bit of hiking since you are searching for mountain gorillas. On locating them, you will have an hour in their presence as you take memorable photos but the whole activity can take 2-3 hours and this will depend on the location where these endangered species spent their last night. After a memorable experience, you will be rewarded with a certificate and then drive back to the safari lodge.
Day 3: Transfer back to Kampala.
Have an early breakfast and transfer back to Kampala and this will be a long road trip but with stopovers for refreshments, en route lunch and photographic moments. On the arrival in Kampala, you will either be dropped at the airport in Entebbe or the hotel and this will be the end of the Mgahinga National park adventure.
