6 DAYS RWENZORI HIKING SAFARI.
Overview.
Take a hike along Rwenzori Mountain where you will reach Guy Yeoman hut. The hike takes you through the bamboo forest, bog, water falls, and rivers like Mobuku as well as spotting primates like olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, and red tailed monkeys among others.
Some bird species that can be spotted here include Rwenzori turacos, Handsome Francolin, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Archers' Robin-chat, White-starred Robin, Rwenzori Batis and so much more. Visit the local community and discover some of the unique cultures in Uganda like the Batooro, Bakonzo and Bakiga.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountains NP.
A pick up from the Entebbe International airport or hotel in Kampala and transfer to the Rwenzori Mountains immediately after a briefing about Uganda and this safari. While on the journey to this park have several stopovers and one in Mubende to buy some refreshments and snacks and another one in Fort portal for lunch.
In case you arrive in Fort portal early, you can take a visit of Isunga cultural community where you will explore the cold springs. The amazing water comes from the ground bubbling but cold. Or you can take a community tour where you will explore the Bakiga and Batooro cultures that live in Isunga village. Then proceed to Rwenzori mountains national park where you will spend your night.
Day 2: Nyakalengija - Nyabitaba Hut.
Start the day with a heavy breakfast at your accommodation site then head to Nyakalengija where you will attend briefing, acquire some potters, and in case you don’t have hiking gears, you can hire them from this point. Then a park ranger guide will take you to start the hike.
Pass through the local communities of the Bakonzo and enjoy how they carry their luggage, get entrained through music and dance if arranged in time and pass through the forest where you will spot some primates like white and black colobus monkeys, Vervet monkeys, and olive baboons among others. Proceed to Nyabitaba hut where you will enjoy your night.
Day 3: Lake Mahoma exploration.
Take a walk around Lake Mahoma where you will encounter primates and different bird species like the Rwenzori turacos. Capture great views of the bamboo trees and later head back to Nyabitaba hut.
Day 4: Nyabitaba - Guy Yeoman hut.
Take breakfast and warm your legs in hot water which will be prepared for you by the cooks, then proceed with a hike through the bamboo forest and cross the Mobuku River as you pass through the bog of Kamato.
The hike rewards you with great views of heather vegetation, water falls, Mount. Baker among others. The hike takes about 5 hours to arrive at Guy Yeoman camp.
Day 5: Guy Yeoman hut-Nyakalengija.
Begin your trek very early and descend back to Nyakalengija at the park headquarters. Here you will leave the hired materials if any and the driver guide will transfer you back to your hotel in Kasese.
Day 6: Transfer back to Kampala.
Wake up early to reach Kampala in time after 6 hours’ drive with stopovers where there are good viewing points like tea plantations, lush forests, crater lakes, rocks and so much more. Arrive in Kampala and you will be dropped at either a hotel in Kampala or airport in Entebbe.
