8 DAYS RWENZORI SAFARI.
Overview.
Trek Rwenzori and reach the highest point in Uganda at Margherita peak which is covered by snow. The safari is rewarding with memories as you take photos, camping moments, campfires, spotting unique wildlife such as the three-horned chameleon, primates like white and black colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys and the beautiful Rwenzori turaco's bird. Visit amazing viewpoints of the crater lakes, valleys and glaciers while on the hike.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Transfer to Rwenzori mountains national park from Kampala/Entebbe.
Start the safari by transferring to the Rwenzori Mountains after a pick up from either the hotel or airport depending on where the starting point will be specified. The journey is through the beautiful hills and valleys plus bustling towns of Mubende, Mityana where you will have a stopover and purchase some refreshments.
Then lunch will be in Fortportal tourism city at gardens restaurant after passing through the green tea plantations and forests. Then proceed with the journey and find yourself in Kasese where you will spend a night.
Day 2: Nyakalengija-Nyabitaba Hut.
Transfer to Nyakalengija which will be the starting point for your hike. The park ranger will brief you about this hike and in case you don’t have hiking gears, the Rwenzori mountaineering services will be available to rent them out at a cost. Start the hike, passing through montane forests infested with black and white colobus, blue monkeys and the Bakonzo communities while getting entertained by their culture.
Later on proceed with the help of the park ranger guide fully armed and the porters and rest from Nyabitaba hut for your first night in the mountain of Rwenzori.
Day 3: Nyabitaba cross Mubuku River to Matte Hut.
Proceed with the hike on day three as you follow the trail passing through the bamboo forests, and cross River Mubuku through the slippery moss-covered rocks. Here you can view mount Stanley and mount Speke then, proceed and find a trail that leads to John matte at 3505m.
Day 4: John Matte (3505m) to Bujuku (3962m).
Wake up and take breakfast while warming your legs and then hike as you pass through the bog areas. Get a superb view of mount Stanley as you pass through the constructed walking board then climb at a slow pace and then arrive at Bujuku Lake and find the way to Bujuku hut where you will spend a night. In case you are celebrating your birthday, enjoy your day from this point.
Day 5: Bujuku - Kitandara Hut.
As you climb the steep slopes passing through the Groundsel Gurly then climb to Scott-Elliot. Then after reaching here, take the trail that takes you to Elena hut and then the use of an ice axe, ropes and mountain boots are very crucial here. After the climb, go directly to Kitandara hut where you will spend the night camping.
Day 6: Kitandara camp – Margherita peak and return to Guy Yeoman.
On this day of excitement, you will wake up a bit early to enjoy the sunrise while hiking to the highest point in Uganda that is Margherita peak. The hike is rough and steep which require ropes and crampons. Enjoy moments of photos and video recordings while at the summit. Then descent back to Guy Yeoman hut for another night.
Day 7: Guy Yeoman – Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija.
Descend from Guy Yeoman to Nyakalengija passing via Nyabitaba. The trail rewards you with different attractions like Kabamba falls, primates, and birds among others. Arrival at Nyakalengija where you will find your driver guide waiting for you for a transfer to your lodge.
Day 8: Transfer back to Kampala/Entebbe from Rwenzori Mountains national park.
Pack your belongings in the vehicle and start the journey back to Kampala after your breakfast. There is an option of visiting Isunga Cultural Community in Fortportal, where you can discover the Bakiga and Batooro cultures at the same point.
Drop off either at a hotel or Entebbe international airport which will mark the end of 8 days Rwenzori safari.
