Overview.
This 7 days of double gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda and Congo is an amazing one as you trek gorillas in these two countries and also a hike to Dian Fossey graveyard. Dian was killed by poachers after she had saved a big population of mountain gorillas in African and particularly in Rwanda.
She introduced gorilla habituation and also started a research centre that still exists today. Also, taking a Kigali city tour where you will visit the Rwanda genocide memorial centre of 1994, the national museum and local markets is ideal.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to a hotel.
Transfer to a hotel on your arrival after a short briefing where the assigned tour driver-guide will offer you the required information about this safari. These two countries are amazing as you take the double gorilla trekking.
Day 2: Transfer to Virunga national park – D.R. Congo.
Wake up early and transfer to Congo after your breakfast. The journey rewards you with beautiful landscape sceneries dotted with the unique natural setting and local population and it takes about 4-5 hours to reach the park. Virunga national park is located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Albertine rift valley.
It is famous for sheltering mountain gorillas but it is also home to other wildlife such the elephants, antelopes, Okapis, warthogs, hippos among others, River Semulik passes in the northern part of the park. On the arrival, transfer and check-in at the place of accommodation.
Day 3: Gorilla trekking in Virunga N/Park.
Transfer to Bukima park station in the morning after breakfast where you will receive information about trekking rules and regulations to trek smoothly. Also at this point, you will be allocated to only one gorilla group to trek and be assigned with a park ranger to guide you while on the trek.
Trekking time depends on the movement of these gentle giants, but most of the time it takes about 2-3 hours and an hour is allocated after setting an eye on them. After a magical hour, you will head back to the starting point and then transfer back to your hotel or lodge.
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
Head back to Kigali city crossing Goma border and then transfer to Volcanoes national park after breakfast. Volcanoes national park is one of the parks located in the Virunga Mountains hence known for having mountain gorillas. On the arrival, you will relax at the lodge and prepare for other exciting moments.
Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Take another gorilla trekking tour after breakfast which starts with a briefing at Kinigi park headquarters. You will then head to the forest to trek the assigned gorilla family and the activity also takes about 2-3 hours of adventuring. After the trek, you will head back to the lodge for refreshing up.
Day 6: Hike to the Dian Fossey grave.
On this day, you will hike and reach the Dian Fossey graveyard with a history about the woman who saved most of the gorillas from poachers and also started a research centre at the base of Virunga volcanoes. The hike is rewarding as you enjoy primates, different bird and tree species while in the trails.
Day 7: Kigali city tour and transfer to Kigali international airport for departure.
Enjoy relaxed breakfast and then travel to Kigali city where you will have a short city tour, allowing you to visit the Kigali art museum with its history and arts, local craft markets, the 1994 Rwanda genocide memorial centre among others. Later on, transfer to the airport followed by a drop off and this will be the end of the safari.
