5 DAYS NYUNGWE AND KAHUZI-BIEGA NP SAFARI
Overview
The safari is amazing as you trek chimpanzees in Nyungwe national park and Eastern low land gorillas in Kahuzi-biega national park. These national parks are located in two beautiful countries that are Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. You have a chance of visiting the Butare Museum and the king’s palace while in Rwanda.
Do not miss this chance to take a canopy walk, the only one in East Africa which rewards you with beautiful scenery, primates and different bird species.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe national park.
The assigned driver guide will welcome you at the airport or will pick you from the hotel in Kigali and make a transfer to Nyungwe national park. This will be after you have changed your currency and maybe got all the necessities you need while on the safari.
An option of en Enroute visit to Nyanza king’s palace or Butare museum is provided. Then check in your place of accommodation in Nyungwe national park.
Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk in Nyungwe forest,
Transfer to the park offices where you will have a checkpoint for chimp permits and also a briefing before trekking. Then, head to the forest with a help of the park ranger guide and the trek takes about 4hours of adventure as you enjoy the sights and sounds in the park. Other attractions in the park include grey-checked, colobus monkeys, owl-faced monkey and birds like the large blue turacos, Rwenzori turacos among others.
At around 14:00hours, take a canopy walk where the trail is suspended on top of the trees and this rewards you with great viewing points of both wild animals mostly primates and birds. The walk takes about 3hours but they are so interesting and worth memorable.
Day 3: Transfer to Bukavu – the gateway of Kahuzi-Biega NP.
Be served with a leisurely breakfast and then check out of the accommodation in Nyungwe forest and then transfer to Bukavu crossing Rusizi II border. You have an option of a community walk on the arrival in Congo. Check in the accommodation and prepare for the next day adventure.
Day 4: Eastern low land gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-biega national park.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is blessed with two types of gorillas that are the low land and mountain gorillas. This time you will head to the park offices and be briefed on the behaviours of these gorillas and to be able to trek smoothly.
Take a trek for about 2-3 hours depending on the distance you locate them an hour will be allocated to take photos or even record videos and at the same time identifying the difference between the mountain gorillas and these low land gorillas. Later on, head back to the accommodation site for your lunch.
Day 5: Transfer back to Kigali international airport.
Have a morning drive after breakfast passing via the Rusizi II border through Nyungwe forest national park. The journey is tremendous and have a stopover lunch enroute in Huye city followed by a drop off at Kigali international airport.
