4 Days Double Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Overview.

This safari offers you an opportunity to track mountain gorillas twice in Volcanoes National Park, visit the local communities and take a hike to twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.

You will begin and end this tour Kigali, the capital of Rwanda where you will have a city tour visiting historical sites such as the genocide museum and art centers.

The highlight will be spending 2 days in Volcanoes National Park which is famous for its mountain gorillas. You will also be able to have a Rwandan cultural tour in the local communities around the park where you can participate in tree planting, beer tasting and other experiences.

Tour Itinerary.

Day 1: Kigali City Tour – Volcanoes National Park

After hot African breakfast, you will be picked up from hotel and go for Kigali city tour. Take time to visit Kigali, mainly the Genocide Memorial, the Inema Arts Center, the Kimironko Market, the Nyamirambo Women's Center and the Question Coffee Café. Lunch in Kigali at Radisson Blue Hotel.

Transfer by car to Volcanoes National Park located in northern Rwanda about 2-hour drive from Kigali.

Arrive early afternoon and check in at your lodge. Relax the rest of the day enjoying the view of forest and getting enough rest for tomorrow’s gorilla trek.

Optional visit to tree nursery for tree planting.

Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s leading national park located in the Virunga volcanic mountain ranges. These towering volcanoes are a habitat to mountain gorillas and mark the borders of northern Rwanda, southwestern Uganda and eastern DR Congo.

In volcanoes national park, there are 10 gorilla families that have been habituated for gorilla trekking. in addition to gorillas, the park is also home to golden monkeys.

Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking and Iby’Iwacu cultural tour

Following Africa hot breakfast, leave your lodge and go to the visitor center – Kinigi. Meet the gorilla rangers and listen carefully to their instructions during briefing on dos and don’ts.

You will be joined with a group of 8 visitors, the maximum number of people who can trek a single gorilla family for 1-hour each day.

Before you do set off into the forest for gorilla trekking, make sure you have packed lunch and drinking water. Thereafter, you will transfer a short distance to the trails leading you into the forest. Searching for gorillas can be as short as 1-3 hours or take you 8 hours depending on their movement. But, with the help of professional rangers, you’re guaranteed to see gorillas. And once they are located, you will be allowed to spend 1 hour with the gentle giants, taking pictures and observing how they feed and play. Note that as covid-19 is still with us, visitors will be required to wear surgical masks.

After seeing gorillas, enjoy your packed snack in the forest and return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will have a community walk and visit the Iby’Iwacu cultural village. Here is a cultural complex display of ancient Rwandan culture including the traditional dressing attire and ritual of former king and queen, iron smelting and natural healing. Visitors can participate in a number of activities including putting on backcloth, traditional Rwandan dance performance among others.

Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking and Visit the Twin Lakes.

Another early morning routine to visit the gorillas for the second time. This time, you will track a gorilla family with members different from what you saw yesterday. For instance, if you tracked a family without baby gorillas, today will be given a chance.

Lunch will be provided back at your lodge.

After lunch, you may choose to visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo and explore the beautiful natural landscape. The lava dammed lakes are 1 and half hour drive from the park. It is said that these lakes were been combined by two floods from the surrounding volcanoes. The area is home to over 100 species of birds including the endangered grey crowned crane.

Day 4: Departure back to Kigali.

After breakfast at leisure, you will be transferred to Kigali for departure from Rwanda at Kigali International airport.
