Overview.
This 10 days safari gives you the best of adventure in Rwanda as you trek the three primates - mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and golden monkeys. Also discover and enjoy the canopy walk in Nyungwe forest national park, boat cruises on Lake Ihema and Kivu.
Have a chance to visit historical and cultural attractions like the Rwanda museum, art and craft markets, and the genocide memorial site among others.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Welcome to Kigali International Airport, Kigali city tour and transfer to hotel.
The driver-guide will receive and welcome you to the land of a thousand hills-Rwanda on your arrival at Kigali international airport. Basing on your arrival time, he will make the transfer you to a booked accommodation for a meal and then head for a city excursion.
Among other places to be visited include the local art and craft shops to purchase some souvenirs, the Gisozi Genocide memorial site, the Juru park one of the highest points to view Kigali city and the Rwanda museum to learn more about the history of Rwanda. Later on, return to the city hotel for your accommodations
Day 2: Depart to Akagera National Park and evening game drive.
Embark on the journey to Akagera national park after a well-spiced cup of tea. It is located in the eastern part of Rwanda at the border of Tanzania and it got its name from the Akagera River that flows through the park. The park is featured by woodland, swamps, low mountains and savannah and this has favoured wild animals to home in this park both land and water animals.
Among others include bushbucks, lions, giraffes, Topis, Oribis, roan antelopes, duikers, impala, cape eland, zebras, hippos, crocodiles with bird species such as Giant Kingfisher, Senegal Lapwings, Squacco Herons, African Openbill stork, Grey Crowned Crane, African Darter among others. Enjoy an evening game drive on your arrival to explore the wildlife and beautiful scenery which will be followed by checking in the accommodation site.
Day 3: Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise.
Take a morning game drive around the national park that will take about 4hours with the experienced park ranger guide who will give you the best knowledge about the park and the attractions found in this conservation area.
Later after lunch, embark on a boat cruise to enjoy water-loving birds and animals on Lake Ihema such as the kingfishers, crocodiles, hippos among others.
Day 4: Travel to Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Enjoy the breeze as you have your breakfast and then head to Nyungwe national park located in south-western Rwanda well famous for chimpanzees. The rain forest mountain areas favour several primates and other bird species, the journey is amazing as you pass through the stunning hills covered with tea plantations and small wooden unique houses around Nyungwe forest. Check in the accommodation and relax the last of the day.
Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest.
An exciting day commences with breakfast and then head for a short briefing at the park headquarters. Receive the rules and regulations to guide you while trekking our cousins. Jump into the forest with the help of the park ranger guide and in the next few hours meet a troop of chimpanzees and follow them for the next hour.
Experience them as they groom, feed, make noise among others in the wild and this will be an unforgettable experience. Trek out of the jungle and head back to the lodge to make you comfortable and relax.
Day 6: Canopy walk and transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
Enjoy a morning canopy walk in Nyungwe forest which will give you an aerial view of this forest. The canopy stands at 525ft high and the lonely planet named it the best canopy walk in the whole world. The great experience is rewarding as primates keep jumping from one tree to another as the bird keep singing. Later transfer to another great national park Volcanoes national park.
It comprises the rainforest vegetation and has five of eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, and these are; Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. The park is famous for homing the remaining refuges of mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Big mammals like buffalo, elephant, bush pig, giant forest hog are rarely seen in this park. On your arrival, you will head for your accommodation to prepare for another exciting moment the next day.
Day 7: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Head for briefing after breakfast to be able to trek the gentle giants in a favourable environment, the briefing takes place at the park headquarters with the help of the park ranger or warden. This starts with checking and verifying gorilla permits, then you are assigned to a group of 8 visitors to trek each gorilla family or troop.
After the trek which can take between 3-4 hours depending on where you locate the gorillas, you will be rewarded with a certificate of trekking in the park and then transfer back to the safari lodge to make yourself comfortable.
Day 8: Golden Monkey trekking and Dian Fossey visit.
Another day of this safari starts with breakfast the briefing and later enter the jungle to trek the golden monkeys. After the trek, head back to the lodge for short leisure and in the afternoon, head to hike and visit the Dian Fossey graveyard. Learn the history behind the gorillas and how this lady sacrificed her life to save these mountain gorillas from poachers but she ended up being killed by these poachers.
Day 9: Transfer to Lake Kivu (Gisenyi) and boat cruise.
Transfer to Lake Kivu after a relaxed breakfast where you will relax your mind in the resort. Enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Kivu that will take you to the coffee island and explore the coffee tour if interested. Spend a night relaxing at the resort and you prepare for the next day departure.
Day 10: Return to Kigali International Airport for a departure flight.
Have a relaxed breakfast and then return to Kigali international airport to catch up with your flight back home. An option of passing through the local craft market if time allows to purchase some beautiful African souvenirs.
